Golfing In The Algarve

The majority of Portugal’s best golf courses are concentrated in the Algarve, which has gained a reputation as one of Europe’s prime golfing destinations.

The mild climate ensures that a game can be enjoyed all year round, and many courses have been designed by leading professionals.

The Tavira area offers a great choice of courses and three of the finest Algarvian courses (2 x 18 holes) are Quinta da Ria, Quinta da Cima and Benamor situated between cabanas and Cacela Velha.

Quinta da Ria This 18-hole golf course extends itself in a spectacular coastal location, situated in the beautiful Ria Formosa Nature Reserve. This golf course is designed by American course architect Rocky Roquemore with memorable holes.

It has five strategically built lakes, more than 300 olive and carab trees with breathtaking views of the ocean or mountains that can be seen from any part of the course. It plays like a mature links course.

Quinta da Cima This is rather longer than Qunta da Ria and although next door plays completely differently and more like an inland course. It is a stern test to anyone whatever their ability but one of the best new golf courses produced in Portugal for many years.

Eighteen holes skilfully scattered by an area of 620.000 m2, the Cima Course is very competitive with dog-legs to the right and to the left and greens well protected by sand hazards and lakes, particularly holes 16, 17 and 18.

Benamor Joaquim Caterino, the Portuguese professional designed this perfect holiday 18-hole golf course with a number of short par fours and stunning sea and mountain views that will make this a great golfing experience. This golf course is within easy walking distance of cabanas village.

Monte Rei This is a brand new development (2x18 holes) situated between Cacela and Altura, designed by Jack Nicklaus these magnificent golf courses are set in over 1000 acres of glorious Algarve countryside. The first of these unique championship courses features no less than 5 lakes surrounded by stunning natural landscapes, rich with indigenous trees and plants. Before pitting there wits against Jack Nicklaus's imaginative and challenging designs, golfers will be able to sharpen their skills at the exclusive golf academy or spend time at the world-class driving range and extensive practice facilities.

Castro Marim Situated close to Altura this is a 18-hole golf course and offers full facilities for every golfer. Opened in June 2001 Castro Marim has amazing mountain, sea and river views. Course designer Terry Murrey, has developed the natural layout of the surrounding terrain to excellent use. Lakes and bunkers along with trees situated in the centre of some of the fairways are challenging. The challenging aspects of the course, whilst providing interest to the low handicappers will also test the ability of the average handicap golfer but remains enjoyable to both.

Colina Verde This is a brand new 9-hole golf course, situated between Tavira and Fuzeta which is well worth a visit.
